Address writing guide

Write an address accurately for domestic, international, and destination forms.

A practical guide to domestic delivery, international delivery, and a service form in another country. Keep the address information intact, distinguish domestic and international formats even for English-speaking countries, then place the same components in the fields used by the service.

Countries and regions with postal-code area suggestions

Japan and 69 additional countries and territories can show region and locality suggestions from a postal code. Suggestions help complete the form; they never invent or confirm a street, house number, building, or unit.

Use the domestic format for delivery within the address country or region

Choose the country or region where the address exists, then follow that local delivery form. Even in English-speaking countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, a domestic address normally does not repeat the country name in the address body when the form already has a country selector.

  1. Choose the country or region where the address is located before entering the address.
  2. Keep the recipient, street and house number, building or unit, locality, region, and postal code in the notation used for domestic mail.
  3. For English-speaking countries, keep the domestic order for locality, state or region, and postal code.
  4. When a domestic form has a Country / Region selector, do not duplicate the country name in the address body.

Example: an English address for UK domestic delivery

Recipient name10 Downing StreetLONDONSW1A 2AA

The country is intentionally absent from this domestic example. Select it in the form or delivery setting instead.

Domestic form field example

Recipient: Recipient nameStreet address: 10 Downing StreetCity: LONDONPostcode: SW1A 2AA

Only the field labels follow the service. Keep the address text, proper names, and postal code in their original notation.

02

Create a country-specific English version for international delivery

For cross-border delivery, keep the domestic form of the address country or region as the basis and add the country name in the English form accepted by the postal or delivery service. This applies to English-speaking addresses too: do not rewrite the domestic lines—make them an international address by adding the country line.

  1. Keep house number, street, building, unit, locality, and postal code in the domestic format of the address country or region.
  2. Where Latin script is needed, use a transliteration or international version accepted by the relevant postal authority or service, not an invented machine translation.
  3. Put the address country or region name in the carrier's required English form on the final line.
  4. Do not translate or guess postal codes, unit numbers, or proper names.

Example: a UK address for international delivery

Recipient name10 Downing StreetLONDONSW1A 2AAUNITED KINGDOM

An English-speaking address still has distinct domestic and international forms. The international version adds the correct country line.

English (international) form field example

Full recipient name: Recipient nameAddress line 1: 10 Downing StreetCity / locality: LONDONPostal code: SW1A 2AACountry / region: UNITED KINGDOM

English is used for the international form labels. The components themselves stay grounded in the notation of the address country or region.

03

Move an address into another country's form without changing its meaning

A purchase, booking, or delivery service abroad can use labels and field order that differ from the address country or region. Follow the receiving form's labels, but keep the address components from the country where the address exists and compare the domestic and international representations separately.

  1. Select the country or region where the address actually exists in the form's Country / Region field.
  2. Map the components to Address line, City, State / region, and Postal code without discarding any required detail.
  3. Keep the domestic representation and the international representation separate for review; do not overwrite one with the other.
  4. Do not add a region or English place name merely because it appears as an unverified suggestion.

Example: a French address in another country's English form

Recipient name10 rue de Rivoli75001 PARISFRANCE

An English form does not make the French street name or postal code English. It only separates the same components into its own fields.

Destination-form mapping example

Full recipient name: Recipient nameAddress line 1: 10 rue de RivoliCity / locality: PARISPostal code: 75001Country / region: FRANCE

For multinational use, do not confuse the receiving form's labels with the address itself. Follow an explicit carrier instruction when one is provided.

Do not translate or guess these details

  • Postal codes, building numbers, unit numbers, and P.O. Box numbers
  • Names of people, streets, buildings, organizations, and other proper nouns
  • Symbols, hyphens, and letter-and-number sequences that are part of the address
  • An unknown region or state. A suggestion alone is not confirmation

A short check before saving or sending

Compare the country or region, recipient name, postal code, street or building number, and unit details with the original mail or the publisher's official information. Veygrit suggestions and translation previews support your review; they never confirm or save an address on their own.
